Documenting A Day (POST 3)
For this week’s assignment, the class was required to document the daily activities we do in our day-to-day lives for 24 hours. The class was tasked with exploring the different functions and interfaces of the main application software programs: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The purpose of using these database applications is to document the different tasks we complete throughout the day that are accustomed to our everyday lives. In this essay I will explain how each application was used to document my everyday life task, including the advantages and disadvantages of each application. I believe these applications can be used in everyday life whether it comes to work, school, or just even when someone has a very hectic schedule.
The first application that was used for this assignment was a word processor known to everyone as Microsoft Word. Microsoft Word is a very popular word processor application that lets its user document and format a variety of texts that can be saved to various systems. In addition to formatting text in a document, the user can also change the fonts and styling of the different text that is created. During the first part of the “Documenting a Day” assignment, I used the word processor to document the 10 daily tasks I complete out of the day. Microsoft Word allowed me to create this list by making it look like an actual to do list by letting put the most important bulleted activities I do throughout the day. One cool thing that I liked while using Microsoft Word was being able to align the text and using different font styles. One disadvantage of word is sometimes depending on the document it could end up not showing everything that is printed.
In the second part of the assignment, we were tasked to use the spreadsheet application known to everyone as Microsoft Excel. This specific application was used to document how much time is used doing the different activities that are performed each day. At first, I wasn’t privy to always using spreadsheet applications like Excel because I always used to feel that they were always complicated. Although, after I was able to take another look at how the application worked it became very useful, especially while doing this project. This spreadsheet application allows you to input data in the form of tables and cells so that you can calculate how much time you spend on doing a specific task. I was able to utilize the average amount of time I spent on a task throughout the day. The application also helped me to see the percentage of time I spent doing the task, which was helpful. The only disadvantage of this app to me is when you try to save a spreadsheet you have to define what you want to save so it doesn’t mess up the work.
Finally, the third application that was used for the “Documenting a Day” assignment was the presentation software application known as, Microsoft PowerPoint. Personally, this is one of my favorite applications to use especially if you want to showcase something visually. PowerPoint lets you do this by creating a slideshow of different text and graphics so that you can illustrate your information to an audience. In this part of the assignment, I was able to visually showcase what I do throughout the day by showing different pictures and animations to show my daily tasks. The only disadvantage I have about PowerPoint is how much space it can take up on memory.
Out of all these applications, the one that I would recommend is Microsoft PowerPoint. I feel that PowerPoint displayed my tasks very well and the fact that I was able to visualize to my audience what I do daily. As far as any other scenarios, I feel Excel would be good when it comes to budgeting and maintaining your bills.
